J&R Music and Computer World

J&R Music and Computer World was a legendary New York City electronics and entertainment retailer that operated a massive destination store in Lower Manhattan near City Hall and One Police Plaza from 1971 until its closure in 2014. At its peak, J&R occupied an entire block of Park Row with separate storefronts for different product categories—computers, audio, video, cameras, music, and home appliances—making it one of the most comprehensive consumer electronics destinations in the United States.

J&R was particularly beloved by New Yorkers and visitors for its exceptional selection of audio equipment, musical instruments, cameras, and electronics at competitive prices with knowledgeable staff. The store was a pilgrimage destination for audiophiles, musicians, and tech enthusiasts visiting New York, offering brands and expertise difficult to match at chain retailers.

J&R closed its physical locations in 2014 and the online business was subsequently wound down. New York City electronics shoppers now gravitate toward B&H Photo Video (still operating in Midtown Manhattan), Adorama, and online retailers like Amazon and Best Buy for the comprehensive selection that J&R once uniquely provided in person.
